H, And H-And-L HingesHardware, the members of which are in the form of those letters in the alphabet.
Half TesterA frame which projects forward over a bed. It is cantilevered out from two columns rising from the head end of the bed frame. Often made of ornately carved wood also brass etc. Normally used to hang curtains, the canopy was originally devised in the days of large draughty buildings to keep out the cold and keep the occupants warm. Half-Lap Multiple Dovetail JointA dovetail joint in which the members do not extend all the way through the joint. Because of this they do not show on one side, for instance, in drawer construction, where they are often used.
Handkerchief TableA drop-leaf table with a triangular-shaped top resembling a handkerchief folded on the bias.
HandscrewsClamps used in woodworking having two jaws of hard, tough wood. The jaws are adjusted with two threaded spindles, one at the rear end of the jaws and the other at the middle. The jaws are opened or closed by grasping the handles of the spindles in each hand and revolving the clamp.
HardwoodThe wood of broad-leaved deciduous trees as distinguished from that of cone-bearing trees.
HeadstockThe motor and live spindle on the left end of a lathe.
Heel of SkewThe part of the cutting edge on a chisel where it forms an obtuse angle with the edge of the blade.
Hepplewhite GeorgeGeorge Hepplewhite was a cabinet and chair maker and is one of the three best known English furniture makers of the 18th century. No pieces made by Hepplewhite are known to exist, but he produced a distinctive style of light, elegant furniture including the shield back chair. His work was fashionable in the last quarter of the 18th Century. Hepplewhite died in 1786.

Hide GlueGlue made from hides and other by products of slaughterhouses.
HighboyA tall chest of drawers supported on high legs, or on a frame. It has a lower section wider and deeper than the upper section, and the two are separated by a fairly prominent horizontal molding which helps hold the upper section in place.
Hogarth, WilliamAn English painter 1697-1761, who in his writings referred to the cyma curve, a distinguishing feature of the cabriole leg, as "the line of beauty."
