Placing a bid on an item you are interested in couldn't be easier. When viewing the item details page you will have two areas from where you can place your bid, one next to the item details and a second at the bottom of the page.
To place your bid simply enter the amount you wish to bid e.g. 50.00. Please note that the bid will be placed in the auction currency and its not neccessary to enter a currency symbol with your bid amount.
Once done you will be asked to review your bid and you will also be able to view vital item details such as the shipping conditions before confirming your bid. To submit your bid simply press the "Place Bid" button.
If your bid is high enough to take the lead in the auction a confirmation message will be displayed to you. However, if your bid has not taken the lead - possibly because of a higher proxy bid or not meeting the reserve price - you will be invited to make a further bid.
Should you decide to retract your bid this can be done via the "Current Bids" section of the member's area.
Some items are offered with a "Buy Now" option. This can be used to purchase the item immediately without having to place a bid.
"Buy Now" can be used at any time until a bid has been placed which is greater than any reserve price for the item.
The "Buy Now" option will appear on the item details page. You will be asked to confirm your intention to buy the item before the sale is concluded. The "Buy Now" decision cannot be retracted and is final.
The Item Watch feature lets you keep a close eye on any auction without having to place a bid on it. This feature means you can be kept up to date on how an auction is doing and prepares you to place a winning bid. You can watch any auction by clicking on the "Watch this item" link on any auction page.
The "Keyword Watch" is a very useful feature which notifies you of newly listed auctions which contain keywords you have chosen. For example if you are looking for a new Extending Table you could enter in those keywords from within your members area area. Each time a new auction is listed containing those keywords you will be notified via email. Try to keep your search words general enough to make sure you dont miss things you might want without being notified of everything that is listed
Standard Auction
This auction is for a single quantity of the item. Please keep in mind that sometimes the auction may be a group consisting of 2 or more items which the seller is offering as a unit, and which they do not wish to separate. This should be clearly shown and stated in the Auction details.
Dutch Auction
A Dutch auction enables the seller to list a multiple quantity auction. For example they may have 100 pens to sell and can list all of these together in a single lot. Bidders will be able to select how many they wish to bid for - you can buy 1 or the whole job lot.
Private Auction
A Private Auction will hide the bidders identity on the item details page. Other bidders will only know there has been a bid and not the bidders name.
Starting Bid
This is the minimum opening bid for the auction. As with a "bricks and mortar auction", there may also be a Reserve Price set which means that the item will not sell for this opening bid amount.
Reserve Price
Enabling a reserve price affectively means the seller will not sell the item for less than the amount set. For example an auction may be set with a start price of 20.00, but only accept winning bids over 50.00. Should a bid be placed for 49.99 the item will close without a winner.
If you place a bid which is under the Reserve you will be notified and the Auction Details page will also show if the Reserve Price has not been met.
Make Offer (if available)
If this option is available the seller has set a range of prices within which they are willing to accept an offer.
If you make an offer which is less than the minimum you will be notified and have the opportunity to increase your offer.
The seller may accept an offer, or decline it - even if above the minimum they requested, preferring to wait for a higher offer
Proxy Bid
You can also place a Proxy Bid by placing what you consider to be the maximum amount you are prepared to bid.
Proxy Bidding will immediately raise your bid by the minimum required to outbid the current high bid.
For example, if the current bid on an auction is 500.00 you can place a proxy bid of 1,000.
Should you remain the only bidder you will only pay 505.00.
However, should the item receive other bids the site will automatically re-bid for you (up to 1,000 in this scenario) to ensure you remain in the lead.
At all times you will pay only the lowest required bid should you win the auction.
Whether you you bid manually or with a Proxy Bid the system will calculate the bid increment according to the following table:
